Laparoscopias

What is a Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to view and treat problems inside the abdomen and pelvis through small incisions. Using a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera on the end, a surgeon can diagnose and treat gynecologic conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, adhesions, fibroids, and other disorders with greater accuracy and less pain than open surgery.

What is the process?

1. Preparation and Anesthesia

The patient is placed under general anesthesia to ensure that she does not feel pain during the procedure. One or more small incisions are made near the navel.

2. Insertion of the Laparoscope

The laparoscope is inserted through a small incision. To improve visibility, the abdomen is filled with gas (carbon dioxide), allowing the surgeon to clearly view the internal organs on a monitor.

3. Diagnosis and Treatment

Depending on the problem detected, the surgeon may perform biopsies, remove cysts, treat endometriosis, or correct other abnormalities using specialized surgical tools inserted through other small incisions.

3. Completion and Recovery

After the procedure, the gas is released and the incisions are closed with stitches. Most patients are able to return home the same day, depending on the complexity of the procedure.

Answers to your questions

Laparoscopy is used to diagnose and treat a variety of gynecologic conditions, including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, pelvic adhesions, uterine fibroids, ectopic pregnancy, and unexplained causes of infertility. It may also be used for more complex procedures, such as laparoscopic hysterectomies.

Most patients can return to normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the procedure. Light activities, such as walking, are usually recommended from day one. It is essential to follow your doctor’s instructions to ensure a safe recovery.

Although laparoscopy is a safe and minimally invasive procedure, there are some risks, including infection, bleeding, damage to nearby organs, and reactions to anesthesia. However, these complications are rare and are usually managed effectively with proper care.

Laparoscopy is an excellent option for many patients due to its minimally invasive nature. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate. Factors such as the size of the cysts or fibroids, pre-existing medical conditions, and the extent of the disease will determine whether it is the most appropriate option. It is important to discuss this with your doctor to evaluate all possible options.
