Fertilización In Vitro (FIV)

US

What is In Vitro Fertilization?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an advanced fertility treatment that has allowed millions of people around the world to fulfill their dream of becoming parents. This process consists of the union of the egg and sperm outside the body, in a specialized laboratory, and then transferring the resulting embryo to the woman’s uterus.

What is the process like?

1. Ovarian Stimulation

Medications are given to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.

2. Egg Retrieval

Minimally invasive and outpatient process where we obtain the eggs.

3. Fertilization

In the laboratory, eggs are combined with sperm to achieve fertilization. In some cases, the ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) technique is used to improve the chances of fertilization.

4. Embryo Culture

The embryos are allowed to develop until they are in optimal conditions to be transferred to the uterus.

5. Embryo Transfer

We place the embryos in the uterus, where the patient can observe the process through ultrasound, it is an outpatient procedure.

6. Pregnancy Test

Two weeks after the transfer, a pregnancy test is performed to determine if the treatment was successful.

Answers to Your Questions

The chances of success of IVF vary depending on factors such as the woman’s age, the cause of infertility, and the quality of the embryos. In general, success rates can range between 40% and 60% in women under 35 years of age, they can reach up to 70%, decreasing as age advances.

Although some couples achieve pregnancy on the first IVF cycle, others may require multiple attempts.  The vast majority of couples achieve pregnancy within the first 3 attempts.

IVF involves several steps, some of which may cause mild discomfort, such as the injection of hormonal medications and egg retrieval. However, most patients describe the process as manageable, and recovery is usually quick.

Risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, multiple pregnancy, and, in rare cases, complications related to egg retrieval. It is important to discuss these risks with your specialist to understand how they are managed and minimized.
