Intrauterine insemination

What is Intrauterine Insemination?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a minimally invasive fertility treatment that involves the direct placement of sperm into a woman’s uterus during her ovulatory period. By reducing the distance that the sperm must travel to reach the egg, the chances of fertilization are increased. This procedure is ideal for couples facing mild fertility difficulties.

What is the process like?

1. Ovulatory Cycle Monitoring

Many patients are stimulated to ovulate with medications at much lower doses than in IVF treatment, while others follow their natural ovulatory cycle.

2. Sperm Preparation

The sperm sample is prepared in the laboratory to improve the concentration of motile sperm and eliminate impurities. This process, called "sperm training," increases the chances of fertilization.

3. Insemination in the Uterus

Once the optimal time of ovulation is determined, the prepared sperm is carefully introduced into the uterus through a thin, flexible catheter. This procedure is quick and painless, similar to a routine gynecological exam.

4. Post-Procedure Follow-up

Follow-up is done to monitor symptoms and determine if fertilization and pregnancy have been successful. Two weeks after the procedure, a pregnancy test is done to confirm the results.

When is it recommended?

IUI is especially useful in the following cases:

  • Unexplained infertility after multiple conception attempts.
  • Ejaculation problems or sexual dysfunction in men.
  • Low motility or moderately low sperm count.
  • Women with ovulation disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • Cervical problems that make it difficult for sperm to pass to the uterus.
  • Use of donor sperm in fertility treatments.

Answers to Your Questions

Generally, 3 to 6 cycles of IUI are recommended before considering more advanced options such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). However, the exact number depends on factors such as age, infertility diagnosis, and response to previous treatments.

IUI success rates vary depending on factors such as the woman’s age, the cause of infertility, and the use of fertility medications. On average, success rates range from 20% to 23% per cycle in women under 35 years of age, and decrease with age.

IUI is a safe procedure with minimal risks. Some women may experience mild cramping or bleeding after the procedure. In rare cases, there may be a risk of infection or multiple pregnancies if fertility drugs are used.

IUI is a quick and painless procedure, similar to a gynecological exam. It lasts between 10 and 15 minutes and does not require anesthesia. Most women can resume normal activities the same day.

Not always. Depending on the infertility diagnosis, some women may benefit from natural (non-drug) IUI or may need medications to stimulate ovulation and increase the chances of success. Your doctor will determine the most appropriate approach for you.
